From having back pain to feeling restricted, there are tons of reasons to hate wearing a bra. But one of the most universal gripes is the discomfort that comes from a pinching underwire. Whether it’s because it’s worn out, badly made or isn’t the right fit, anyone who’s worn an underwire bra will tell you there’s nothing worse than feeling a rogue wire digging into your skin. The good news is you don’t have to subject yourself to discomfort to get support. Today’s wireless bras offer far more lift and structure than wireless bras of the past. No longer just flimsy bralettes, the best wireless bras on the market will give you the support you need with the comfort and flexibility that wired bras rarely provide.

The contour cups give you a natural shape, while the long thick band offers all-day support — making this a great everyday bra. Along with adjustable straps, the ultrasoft bra also boasts a padded hook-and-eye closure for extra comfort. The flat bonded neckline and underarm edges disappear under clothing while smoothing you all the way around,” she raved. Our Commerce Editor, Sarah Weldon, says this Skims bralette is “just as supportive and smoothing as any classic bra I’ve ever worn, but a zillion times more comfortable. The material is so, so soft that it feels like a second skin. Because there are so many color options, I was able to find my perfect nude. I can wear the sheerest white tee and it still won't show!” Since it is a bralette you do have to pull it over your head to put it on, but Weldon says the lack of adjustability in the band doesn’t make the bra lack in the support department. “I feel completely supported — which is unusual for a comfy bralette,” she said. Perhaps best of all, it’s size-inclusive and ranges from XXS to 4XL.

“Even a strapless can be wire-free,” Sena told us. “It’s a one-piece foam pad with an extra-wide bottom band for built-in support and silicone lining so it stays put and doesn’t slide down!” The comfortable bra is not adjustable, so you do have to pull it over your head to wear it, but the cotton-nylon-spandex-blend material is stretchy enough that it won’t be a workout putting it on and taking it off. It comes in both black and white and ranges in size from small to XL.

“This is by far the most comfortable bra I’ve ever worn and I’ve told all of my friends they need it,” Commerce Manager Julia Webb said. “While it looks like a basic sports bra (and has zero padding), the fabric feels like butter and I occasionally forget that I’m wearing it when it’s on. It’s completely smooth and I find myself wearing it weekly.” It’s completely seamless so it’s nearly invisible under clothes, and it comes in 11 neutral colors so you should be able to find one that matches your skin tone. While it’s not the sexiest option you can wear, Webb loves how supportive and comfortable it is. You can read her full review of the bra here.

Weekend Editor Rachel Roszmann has been wearing this Maidenform bra for over three months and says it is “wildly comfortable.” “There’s no gap up top (great for ladies who aren’t as perky as they used to be) and it feels like a camisole. It also doesn’t force my boobs up too much, which push-bras tend to do — which can make you look like you have a thick neck!” she added. It even has mesh details along the sides and back, making it super-breathable to help keep you cool throughout the day.

If you’re in the market for an ultrasoft bralette, Keippel suggests this Commando option. “It has easy XS-XL sizing and an ultrasoft fabric,” she said. Made from a luxuriously soft Austrian modal blend that is sustainably sourced and resistant to pilling, the smoothing bra has raw-cut edges for a barely-there look and feel. It comes with molded cups and removable padding and is even machine-washable, unlike most other lingerie options. Customers say it’s even a great problem solver. “I have a pacemaker implanted in my left chest. The strap of my previous bras rubbed and irritated the slight bulging of the pacemaker. This bra’s strap is smooth and flexible enough not to bother the area. The fit and lift are also better than other bralettes I have tried,” wrote one.

“An ideal wireless bra must strike a balance between snugness and comfort, ensuring it provides ample support without constricting any specific area,” said Lau. Aside from comfort and support levels, there are a few key factors to consider.

  • Band: According to Sena, “90% of a bra’s support comes from its band, so pay extra close attention to it while shopping.” Bands that are a minimum of 2 inches wide will offer the most support. A wider band also helps distribute the weight of your breasts more evenly and helps anchor the bra itself to your rib cage, ensuring you don’t have to constantly adjust it.

  • Fabric: “You’ll want to look for firmer nonstretch options with wider straps. Also, give the straps a gentle tug so you can see how stretchy they are and how fast they will presumably stretch and start to droop with the weight of your boobs,” said Sena. Options with a “power mesh lining” will help provide an extra layer of support in unlined and soft cup bras.

  • Cups: While you may think wireless bras are all pullover bralettes, there is a wide variety of clasp styles available on the market now too. Sena told us options with clasps “will give you the greatest amount of adjustability, so if it starts to stretch out, you can tighten.” And if you want a wireless bra that provides shaping of the bust, look for an option with foam.

  • Bra fit: As with any bra, finding your correct size is essential to finding an option that is comfortable and supportive.

To figure out which wireless bras are worth shopping for, we talked to bra experts, designers and our own team of shopping experts and had them weigh in on what to look for when picking the right wireless bra for different needs. In addition to extensive market and product research, where we examined product specs and user reviews to find the most popular styles, we also polled this crew to find out which wireless bras are in their lingerie drawers — because there’s nothing like a recommendation from someone who has bought and used the product themselves.

You may think a lack of wire means a lack of support, but Keippel told us, “There is a lot of technology that now allows for support for all cup sizes in wireless bras. This way all customers can now have the comfort of a wireless bra, but with the support needed to wear it every day.” Many wireless bras offer additional padding and molded cups that offer more coverage and added lift. Others have strong bands and super stretchy fabric which many find much more comfortable.

Luckily, it is easy to figure out your correct size, and you can do this in just a few minutes at home. “First, you will need a tape measure (measuring unit should be inches) to take your rib and bust measurements,” said Noemi Diaz-Justino, senior design director of lingerie brand True & Co. “Holding the tape measure parallel to the floor, wrap it snugly (not tight) around your rib cage. If the measurement is an odd number, add 5 inches. If the measurement is an even number, add 4 inches.

“Next, keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor, wrap the tape measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust. Now subtract the rib measurement (with the added inches) from the bust measurement. The difference will determine your cup size. The guide for cup sizes goes like this: 1 inch = A cup, 2 inches = B cup, 3 inches = C cup, 4 inches = D cup, 5 inches = DD, 6 inches = DDD.”

“It’s a misconception you need a wire, especially if you’re larger-busted. Yes, it provides structure so the cup doesn’t collapse, but it actually doesn’t add much support. Now with advancements in technology and design, wireless bras can be just as supportive as their wired counterparts, Sena told us. Swati Kelkar, chief product officer at Maurices, agreed, telling us the options available to shop now “are body-inclusive with adjustments that suit your individual needs just like a bra with underwire as long as it fits well and offers the support needed for your body shape and lifestyle.”

If you have a larger cup size, you should look for options with a hook-and-eye closure, Lau told us, “enabling adjustments at the back for enhanced support, a feature particularly vital for those who are a D cup or larger.” Broader straps also significantly enhance both comfort and support for individuals with curvy figures who wear a C, D or larger cup size. “And for individuals with curvier figures who lean towards unlined bras, the application of advanced bonding and hot-melt technologies to the fabrics can significantly improve support, marrying comfort with functionality,” she added.
