BMW driver behind bars after stealing roadside plants

A woman has been detained for at least 10 days by police after she was caught loading roadside plants into the boot of her BMW.

Video shows the the driver pulled over at the side of a busy road in the popular beachside city of Sanya on China's Hainan island province earlier this week.

The woman is alleged to have placed seven potted plants into her boot before driving away, the Nanguo Metropolis Daily reported.

The plants had been placed by the side of the road ready for workers to plant them in the beds dividing the car and scooter lanes.

The woman was later identified by authorities and arrested. She remains in custody in accordance to state laws.

The video gained traction on Chinese social media site Weibo where users were left stumped over the woman's behaviour.

"You can afford a BMW but can't afford plants?" one person asked.

"Is she rich or poor?" another queried.

Last year the theft of a plant had devastating consequences for a Sydney family after it contained the remains of a loved one.

And opportunistic thieves aren't just setting their sights on potted plants, with a man filmed ripping out a tree from a Sydney home's driveway in 2019.
