An 11-year-old boy drowned Sunday evening while with a friend at the Carp River Conservation Area, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said Monday.

OPS said first responders were called to the scene off Terry Fox Drive around 7 p.m. by the boy's friend, after the boy "somehow" entered the Carp River.

A passerby jumped into the water to help, OPS said.

Firefighters arrived and began performing CPR. Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts and transported the boy to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the incident are asked to contact police.
