Brooke Shields Would ‘Absolutely’ Do Broadway Again: Theater ‘Welcomed Me When No One Welcomed Me’ (Exclusive)

Asked what kind of show she’d want to next step into, Brooke Shields told PEOPLE, “Anywhere they want me!"

Brooke Shields would happily be a Broadway baby again.

The Blue Lagoon star, 59, told PEOPLE exclusively on the red carpet of the 77th annual Tony Awards that she would “absolutely” return to the Great White Way.

“Are you kidding?” she exclaimed. “Broadway welcomed me when nobody else was welcoming me.”

Shields has five Broadway musical credits to her name: Grease in 1994, Chicago in 2005, Cabaret in 2001, Wonderful Town in 2004 and The Addams Family in 2011. As she noted, she’s “usually a replacement,” inheriting a role from another performer. 

“That's exciting for me,” she shared. “Because if there is somebody that wins the Tony and they leave the show, they usually call me! Which, it's a huge honor.”

As for what kind of show she’d want to next step into, she responded, “anywhere they want me! I'd like to do a comedy-drama. I'd like to do a straight play. I haven't done a straight play in a while.”

The Manhattan-born actress and mother of two added that she “started going to Broadway when I was a little, little girl — where you thought the first row, looking up, was a good seat. So to me, it's a part of my life.”

That’s especially true now that Shields has been elected as the next president of Actors' Equity Association, the labor union representing theater actors and stage managers. “I'm able to really hear what the issues are that need to be brought to public consciousness,” she told PEOPLE, “so that we can really make changes.”

Of her all-yellow ensemble for Broadway's big night — including coordinating Crocs after toe surgery — Shields quipped, "I couldn't do this in heels!"

The 77th annual Tony Awards, hosted by Ariana DeBose, are airing live from Lincoln Center in New York City on Sunday, June 16, on CBS (8 ET/PT) and streaming on Paramount+.
