Canelo vs Munguia: Start time UK, undercard, latest odds, prediction, ring walks tonight

Canelo Alvarez faces Jaime Munguia tonight, with his undisputed super-middleweight world title on the line.

The 33-year-old is in acton on Cinco de Mayo weekend and it’s a particularly special occasion this time against compatriot Munguia, his first Mexican opponent in seven years.

It was on this weekend two years ago that Canelo fell to defeat against Dmitry Bivol when stepping up to challenge at light-heavyweight, but a return to 168lbs has brought three wins since then, with Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder and most recently Jermell Charlo all beaten on points.

Canelo is nearing two decades as a professional, his record now standing at 60-2-2, but he has insisted he still has three or four more years left in the sport.

His WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF belts will be on the line tonight against Munguia, who boasts an unbeaten 43-0 record and now looks to dethrone the super-middleweight king.

The 27-year-old was last in the ring in January, when he also faced Ryder and stopped the Briton in the ninth round for his 34th victory inside the distance. That was only Munguia’s second fight at 168lbs, having beaten Sergiy Derevyanchenko last year when first making the step up in weight.

While this is by far the toughest test of Munguia’s career, he is a former world champion, having held the WBO super-welterweight strap and defended it five times before moving up in 2019.

Canelo vs Munguia prediction

Canelo has at times stepped into the ring in his career and faced an opponent who does not truly believe they can beat him, with the money and big stage that comes with securing a fight against the Mexican a win in itself. That will not be the case with Munguia

He will be the bigger man on the night, holding a significant height advantage over Canelo, and he will need to make that count.

Munguia’s defence has been a weakness in his career, though, one he could get away with against lesser fighters, but he cannot afford to be flat-footed and leave himself open here.

Canelo can retain his undisputed status with another Cinco de Mayo win (AP)

Canelo does not quite have the same invincible aura that he possessed a few years ago, facing suggestions that he may be starting to slow down, but he still remains a brutal fighter and arguably the star of the boxing world.

There’s every chance Munguia makes a fast start, using his size advantage to keep Canelo at bay and establish himself in the bout, but we’re going for the champion to make a fourth defence of his undisputed crown, grinding Munguia down in the late rounds and taking advantage of the openings his opponent will offer up.

Canelo to win, unanimous decision.
