Carson Daly Jokes “Today” Show Has 'No Sign of Hoda Anywhere,' as Craig Melvin Takes Over as Anchor: 'Surprised by It Too'
Hoda Kotb exited the 'Today' show on Jan. 10, making way for Melvin to replace her in the co-anchor seat
It’s the start of a new era on the Today show.
After Hoda Kotb exited the NBC morning show on Friday, Jan. 10, Craig Melvin took over her co-anchor spot on Monday, Jan. 13. His co-anchor Savannah Guthrie offered her support as did weatherman Al Roker. But it was Carson Daly who couldn’t help but joke about the new head anchor.
“You know what the Today show is good at?” Daly, 51, asked during the Monday broadcast. “It’s getting rid of pictures. No sign of Hoda anywhere in the back. All the hallways now Craig is everywhere.”
Melvin, 45, laughed off Daly’s observation, admitting, “I actually was surprised by it too.”
Roker quipped of the Melvin takeover, “It’s like the reverse of the Elf on the Shelf.”
But Melvin was wary of being known as the one to erase Kotb, asking Roker, “Should we do a check of the weather before we get in trouble?”
“I think we should,” Roker agreed, laughing. “That was the shortest tenure ever.”
Melvin was excited to kick off his first official day as co-anchor on Monday, telling Guthrie at the top of the show, “Let’s go. And there’s no one I would rather ride with than you.”

Meanwhile, Kotb shared her support for Melvin and Guthrie on Instagram ahead of Melvin’s debut.
“Wake up in the morning ….and knock ‘em dead @savannahguthrie @craigmelvinnbc xxx I am rooting for you ❤️❤️,” Kotb captioned a picture of the co-anchors.
And while Kotb plans to cheer her former co-workers on, she was also celebrating being able to sleep in, sharing a screenshot of her 3 a.m. alarms that were shut off.
“No alarm…whaaaaaaaattttt???” Kotb captioned the image.
The mother of two also took to Instagram on Monday to share her own morning boost, posting the inspirational message, “And suddenly, you know… It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.”
“Here’s to everyone starting fresh— @craigmelvinnbc and @savannahguthrie ….. @jennabushhager and friends.. and to me! Lets do this!” Kotb captioned her post.
The Today show airs weekdays on NBC beginning at 7 a.m. ET.
