The Project's Carrie Bickmore shares daughter's wise thoughts

Carrie Bickmore is known for her well-informed, sensible and no-nonsense approach to the often crazy goings-on in this world and it looks like her eldest daughter is taking after her mum.

With tough stage 4 coronavirus restrictions underway in Victoria, The Project host shared five-year-old Evie’s wise thoughts on state premier Dan Andrews’ unprecedented move in Monday night’s episode.

“Everyone knows it’s the right thing, as Evie who’s five had the insight to say to [son] Ollie, ‘He’s just trying to keep us safe, Ollie, he’s just trying to keep us safe’,” Carrie said.

During the discussion with co-hosts Peter Helliar, Waleed Aly and Steve Price, the 39-year-old Gold Logie winner opened up about how the restrictions have hit home with her family of five.

“I think yesterday was a really interesting day, especially in our household, I noticed the kids really struggling for the first time. I think the idea of another six weeks not seeing their friends, not at school, just this feeling of ‘what is this world we’re in?’” she said.

“Maybe [they’re] looking at us for comfort but we’ve stopped being, ‘we’ll be right, we’ll be right!’ And we’re all a bit like, ‘awwwh,” she added.

Carrie shares 12-year-old son Ollie, daughter Evie, 5, and 18-month-old daughter Adelaide with her partner Chris Walker.

In November 2019, she talked about the ‘gentle sadness’ she felt when Ollie — who she had with her late husband Greg Lange — was in his final year of primary school.

“It’s the end of an era. The end of primary school for my eldest and I’m not ready.”

Steve Price’s fears for his mother

Elsewhere in the chat, an emotional Steve Price spoke about the toll the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is taking on him, adding that he’s not sure if he’ll ever see his 80-year-old mother again.

“She’s in the zone that anything could happen, and I just feel gutted that I might not ever physically see her again,” he said.

Under the strict Stage 4 coronavirus lockdown rules, Melbournians must stay at home for the next six weeks unless they have to go out for a handful of essential reasons, and when they do they can only venture within a 5km radius of their home.

They must also wear a face mask in public spaces (unless exercising) and abide by the city’s first-ever nighttime curfew which Premier Andrews introduced on Sunday — the measure is set to be heavily enforced by police and defence force members.
