Country Music Star Toby Keith Dead at 62
Country music star Toby Keith died Monday following a three-year battle with stomach cancer. He was 62.
His death was announced early Tuesday morning across his social media channels. “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family,” the statement reads. “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

Keith was a seven-time Grammy nominee. He was the recipient of 12 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, three Country Music Association (CMA) Awards and three American Music Awards. He released 21 studio albums (including two Christmas albums) and charted with the hit singles “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” (1993), “How Do You Like Me Now?!” (1999), “Beer for My Horses” (2003) and “As Good As I Once Was” (2005).
Acting credits included films Broken Bridges (2006) and Beer for My Horses (2008).
Keith went public with his cancer diagnosis in June 2022. “I’ve spent the last six months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery,” he wrote on Instagram. “So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax.
“I am looking forward to spending this time with my family,” his statement continued. “But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.”
In September, he accepted the Icon Award at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Music Awards; you can watch his final televised performance below. Three months later, he headlined his first concerts since revealing his cancer diagnosis at Park MGM in Las Vegas.
