When Laura Rudd and her husband purchased their home in Lincolnshire, England, in 2020, they were surprised to find a note left behind from the previous homeowners — a heartfelt letter the couple shared to TikTok.

Now, the couple have sold the home to new owners, gifting them the letter from the original owners and hoping to continue the tradition for as long as possible.

As Laura, 28, tells PEOPLE, she found the letter the day they received the keys.

"It was obvious from when we first looked around the house that it was very loved," Laura tells PEOPLE. "It must have been a hard sell."

The letter, as shared on TikTok, read: "Welcome to your new home. This house has been our home since the mid '50s and in that time, Mom & Dad raised four of us children in these four walls. And, my, it was often a tight fit!"

The letter continued: "In the following years there has been so much happiness and love and sadly a little grief too, hence where we are today. But in all of these years, the thing that resounds the most is the laughter, and there was so much of that with family, relatives and friends."

"So on behalf of all of us ... I sincerely wish you all the happiness this wonderful home has to offer, not to mention the stunning outlook and views," the letter added.

The letter closed "with heartfelt best wishes" for the Rudds' future.

She adds that she and her husband knew little about the family, other than "that they’d lived in the house since it was first built."

Though they tried to contact the family, they were stymied by regulations on information privacy. Now, they keep the letter in a memory box, along with photos of the house when they moved in, and photos of the day they moved out.

Since that day, they've returned the favor, selling the home to a new owner — whom they gifted the letter, along with their own stories and other items they'd found through the renovation process (like a note that read, "I did this 18/12/65," written in pencil on the original bathroom wallpaper).
