Curb Your Enthusiasm Is Poised to Deliver the Perfect Spite Finale

Curb Your Enthusiasm Is Poised to Deliver the Perfect Spite Finale

After a quarter century, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm will conclude, once and for all, with its April 7 finale — and I’ve got a pret-tay, pret-tay, pret-tay good idea of how it’s all going to end for everyone’s favorite curmudgeon, Larry David.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s the only way to bring this 12-season experiment in social indecency to a satisfactory close.

The origins of this theory date back to last September, when Jerry Seinfeld told a sold-out crowd at Boston’s Boch Center that he was working on something new — something tied to the much-maligned Seinfeld finale.

“Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending,” he said at the time. “It hasn’t happened yet… and just what you’re thinking about, Larry and I have also been thinking about, so you’ll see… you’ll see.”

As you’ll recall, Seinfeld’s 1998 finale saw Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer stand trial for violating a Good Samaritan law. And 26 years later, Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David is being put on a trial for violating Georgia’s Election Integrity Act. Ever since his arrest, Larry has continued to brush up against the law — take, for instance, his Episode 6 arrest for vandalization — and in the penultimate episode, a misunderstanding with Cheryl’s masseuse stoked fears of Larry getting #MeToo’d.

What’s more, Curb Season 12 has seen Larry constantly reminded that he returned to Seinfeld (after stepping away ahead of Season 8) to co-write one of the most critically reviled sitcom sendoffs of all time. Why keep bringing this up unless David & Co. wanted to keep this decades-old episode of television fresh in viewers’ minds?

That’s why I’m predicting that LD will double down, and Curb’s series finale will be a recreation of Seinfeld’s series finale. Larry will stand trial in a courtroom filled with Curb’s most memorable guest stars, including Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards and Jason Alexander — all of whom recurred in Season 7, which revolved around (heh!) producing a new Seinfeld finale.

Then in the end, I believe the fictional Larry David will be found guilty — if not for violating some preposterous election law, then for his myriad social faux pas. Susie will call Larry a “sick f–k” one last time, then he’ll be hauled off to a jail cell, where he’ll complain about a bunch-up in his trousers. A pants tent, if you will.

Some will love it, some will hate it. It’ll be the perfect spite finale.
