Dad's unexpected response to driver who fatally struck young son
Kye Duclos's parents and sister were at the horrific scene in Melbourne on Friday while paramedics tried to save his life.
The grieving dad of a 12-year old boy who died after being hit by a car on Friday has shared what he said to the driver at the "horrifying" scene.
Kye Duclos was walking home from school just after 4.30 pm when he crossed "built-up traffic" on a road in Mulgrave, situated in Melbourne's southeast. His family were told it was unlikely Kye would have had clear sight of the second lane when he stepped out onto the road.
"He crossed without the green pedestrian light and was unfortunately hit by a car," his dad Michael said in an emotional statement online.
Both parents rushed to be by their son's side while an off-duty mobile intensive care paramedic and multiple ambulance crews fought to keep Kye alive, with the driver watching on. Michael decided to approach the the driver and offer his condolences.
"I went and just gave him the briefest, 'I'm so sorry this has happened'," Michael told 9 News. "It's not that person's fault."
After Kye was airlifted to hospital he went into cardiac arrest and "passed away within minutes".
