Demi Lovato has opened up about their journey with gender identity, saying they're now comfortable for people to refer to them as either 'they/them' or 'she/her' – after constantly having to explain what being non-binary means to others, something they described as "exhausting".

Speaking to GQ España in a new interview, Demi shared, "I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting. That's one of the reasons I also feel comfortable with feminine pronouns. I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know it's important to continue spreading the word."

They initially came out as non-binary in May 2021 and went solely by they/them until August 2022, when they spoke out to say they've been "feeling more feminine" and to remind fans that they're a "fluid person".

Demi also used the new interview as an opportunity to share more about their own journey with gender, particularly when asked about the recent movement for non-binary actors choosing to opt out of entering into awards that have gendered categories.

"I face this every day. For example, in public toilets," they said. "Having to access the women's bathroom, even though I don't completely identify with it. I would feel more comfortable in a genderless bathroom.

"It also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents, where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me. I see myself conditioned to choose woman because there aren't other choices. I think this has to change. Hopefully, with time, there will be more options."

Despite facing challenges whilst being an activist for the queer community, Demi added that it was all worth it, so long "there are people who tell me that I am an inspiration, or that I've helped them learn more about themselves and feel more comfortable in their skin".
