Detectives have launched an investigation after an electric scooter rider died following a collision in east London.

Officers were scrambled to the scene of the crash on Woolwich Manor Way at 1.50am on Sunday.

They found an e-scooter rider seriously injured on the road.

The 27-year-old was taken to hospital where he died.

There were no other vehicles at the scene when police arrived and no arrests have been made.

A Met Police statement said: “Police were called at 01:50hrs on Sunday, 5 May to reports of a collision at Woolwich Manor Way, at the junction with Albatross Close, E6. Officers, London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended.

“At the scene, an e-scooter rider was found in the road with serious injuries. There were no other vehicles present.

“Despite the efforts of paramedics, police and later hospital staff, a 27-year-old man, died in hospital on Tuesday, 14 May.”

The statement added that the man’s next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

Rental electric scooters are the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads or in other public places in London.

Fines for riding an illegal scooter are Fixed Penalty Notice for no insurance or a £300 fine and six penalty points. Police have not confirmed if the scooter was a rental version with a speed limiter.

Seven e-scooter riders died in crashes in the UK last year while there were 1,269 collisions, according to government figures.
