Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Edge Closer to 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' Reboot as Prime Video Sets Premiere Date
Phoebe Waller-Bridge was originally slated to take on the role of Mrs. Smith, but the 'Fleabag' creator was ultimately recast amid creative differences with star and executive producer Donald Glover
Prime Video is gearing up for the release of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a reimagined television series based on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 2005 film.
In a press release shared with PEOPLE, the streamer announced that the Donald Glover-led series will debut sometime in early 2024.
“Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners—in espionage and in marriage,” the official synopsis reads. “Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”

Though Maya Erskine will take on the role of the titular female agent, the series originally starred Glover as Mr. Smith and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Mrs. Smith.
The Fleabag creator and star, 36, eventually stepped away from the project back in September 2021 due to creative differences with the Community alum.
"I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it,” Waller-Bridge later told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023. “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”
At the time of her departure, Prime Video echoed similar sentiments in a statement shared with PEOPLE: "We can confirm that Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover have mutually and amicably parted ways on the series."

The streaming platform also stated that Waller-Bridge's role will be recast as Glover "whom the series idea first originated, continues as EP and star, with co-creator and executive producer Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo), who will serve as showrunner, and executive producers Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer (New Regency)."
Glover, 39, first announced the project with Waller-Bridge on his Instagram Story in February 2021, sharing a video of himself dancing alone before cutting to footage of the award-winning Fleabag creator and actress.
"Mr + Mrs Smith," he wrote at the time. "Donald Glover x Phoebe Waller-Bridge."

In the video, Waller-Bridge leaned against a door frame in a similar fashion to Jolie's pose in the movie poster for the original Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Despite calling it quits after teaming up for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Glover and Waller-Bridge have worked together in the past, starring as Lando Calrissian and L3-37 respectively in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story.
