Ed Sheeran is engaged to girlfriend Cherry Seaborn

Ed Sheeran has confirmed that he and girlfriend Cherry Seaborn are officially engaged.

The singer shared the news that he proposed to his longtime partner on Instagram today (January 20) and revealed that the couple got engaged at the end of last year.

"Got myself a fiancé just before new year," he wrote alongside a sweet picture of the couple embracing.

"We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well."

Ed and Cherry have been dating since 2015 after first meeting in school, and while they've generally kept out of the public eye in their time together, the times we have seen them together have proven the pair are nothing adorable together.

Remember that time they photobombed Taylor Swift, for example?

Speaking last year, Ed also revealed that he's already been planning details of his wedding (even before popping the question), saying that in an ideal world he'd have no fancy sit down dinner and would instead treat his guests to fish and chips.

"I would have the wedding mid-afternoon and then just have food trucks," he said. "Like have fish and chips, pizza, jerk chicken. As soon as the wedding is over, people grab a beer and grab finger food and there's no fancy meal."

Although, he did acknowledge that he may not exactly be able to get his way when he actually does get married.

"I don't think the groom is ever allowed to plan anything," he joked. "You're going to be a bad husband if you take control. It's the girl's day. The groom just has to run with it."

Well, as long as you're aware of that, Ed, we're sure it'll all be fine.

The happy news comes after Ed celebrated a pretty stellar comeback year in 2017, having headlined Glastonbury, collaborated with Eminem and Beyoncé, bagged a Game of Thrones cameo and earned an MBE.

And that's not to mention his record-breaking chart performances either, with his album ÷ breaking the record for most stints at Number 1 by a male solo album after returning to the top spot for a seventh time over Christmas.

Now the only real question left is what song the couple will dance to at their wedding?
