Emma Stone has admitted it would be “so nice” if people referred to her by her actual name.

In a recent interview, Stone’s The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder explained that he finds it difficult to refer to Stone, 35, by her stage moniker since he is used to calling her “Emily”.

“Before we continue, I’d like to say something. Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”

Stone, who won an Oscar for her turn in Poor Things earlier this year, told the interviewer: “You can say Emma. You can say anything.”

The Hollywood star explained that people on set will call her Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally because her real name was taken by another actor in the SAG-AFTRA union.

She continued: “When I get to know them, people that I work with do. It’s just because my name was taken. Then I freaked out a couple of years ago.”

The Superbad star also admitted she suffered an identity crisis when she realised she wanted to be known as Emily instead, but had already built her career on her stage name.

"For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore’,” she continued. “’Just call me Emily.’ Nathan calls me Em, which is easier."

When asked whether she would correct a fan who called her by her real name instead of Emma, the Easy A star replied: “No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”

Previously Stone shared how she came up with her stage name, revealing she aspired to be called Emma after her favourite Spice Girl, Emma Bunton, also known as Baby Spice.

“Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am,” she on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2018.

“It wasn’t necessarily because of her but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes I did.

“And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes it was.”
