Turns out Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis got engaged back in September - weeks before anyone thought. Kerr and Mewis shared some photos on social media on Tuesday night, showing the moment the Matildas captain popped the question to her American partner.

As the caption shows, Kerr and Mewis got engaged way back on September 1 - a lot earlier than we actually realised. But as this publication previously pointed out, Mewis dropped a huge clue about the engagement on September 4.

In a photo of Kerr and Mewis relaxing on a boat after the Women's World Cup, the American player can be seen with a gigantic rock on her ring finger. But the engagement rumours only started doing the rounds in late September when Mewis made an appearance in a promotional video for EA Sports’ new FC 24 video game.

Mewis confirmed the rumours earlier this month in an interview with People, saying Kerr has "just been everything" to her. "My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics," the American said.

But for those of us paying attention, the writing was on the wall over two months earlier. A September 1 engagement means it actually occurred less than two weeks after the Matildas' final game at the World Cup - a loss to Sweden in the bronze medal game.

Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis 'proud to display relationship'

Kerr and Mewis were opponents at the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with Kerr representing the Matildas and Mewis playing for the USA. The football stars started dating back in 2020, but the relationship only became public knowledge the following year.

The public cottoned onto the romance when the players shared a beautiful on-field moment at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Mewis was seen consoling her devastated girlfriend as they sat on the pitch after the bronze medal game, which the Matildas lost to the USA.

Mewis revealed earlier this year that she's "proud" to be able display her relationship with Kerr on a global stage like the World Cup. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said. Kerr added: “We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”

Kerr was named 'icon of the year' on Tuesday night at the 'Marie Claire' Women of the Year awards. The Matildas won 'champions of the year' after their historic run to the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Kerr told the publication: “Playing to packed stadiums around the country, in front of family and friends, while having the whole country support and get behind us was the highlight of 2023 for me. It was a surreal time and something I will remember for the rest of my life.”
