'At War With Ourselves' by H.R. McMaster

In the six years since H.R. McMaster left his post as national security advisor to former president Donald Trump, he has turned his tumultuous year-long stint in the administration into a book.

The bestselling authors’ latest book, At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House, will hit bookstore shelves on Aug. 27, Harper (an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers) announced on April 30.

In its pages, McMaster, 61, recalls his “turbulent and consequential 13 months in the Trump White House,” after entering “an administration beset by conflict and the hyper-partisanship of American politics,” per an official synopsis.

“It is a story of overcoming challenges to help a disruptive President drive necessary shifts in U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment in history,” the synopsis says.

The book will also include insight from McMaster — who was a U.S. Army officer for 34 years before retiring as a lieutenant general in 2018 — into other high-up officials in Trump’s administration.

H.R. McMaster and former President Donald Trump

“He writes frankly about some of Trump’s more unscrupulous political advisors who were determined to undermine McMaster and others to advance their narrow agendas,” Harper says in a statement, “as well as Cabinet officials who, deeply disturbed by Trump’s language and behavior, prioritized controlling the President over collaboration.”

The author’s assessment of his own ups and downs as national security adviser, particularly with the 2024 presidential election coming up, is “candid and fresh,” the publisher says.

“McMaster rises above the fray to lay bare the good, the bad and the ugly of Trump’s presidency and give readers insight into what a second Trump term would look like,” per the official description.

The former security adviser looks toward the future but also reflects on the past with At War with Ourselves, “adroitly [assessing] the record of Trump’s presidency in comparison to the Obama and Biden administrations,” the publisher notes.

McMaster is also the author of two other bestselling books, Dereliction of Duty and Battlegrounds. Dereliction of Duty, released in 1998, analyzes “how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia" according to the book's description.

Battlegrounds, centers on the Capitol Riot, “addressing the January 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol and recommending how citizens across the free world can work together to restore confidence in democratic institutions and processes,” the book's description explains.

At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House is set to publish on Aug. 27.
