Game of Thrones’ Ian Gelder, Who Played Kevan Lannister, Dead at 74
British actor Ian Gelder, who played Tywin Lannister’s brother Kevan on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 74 of complications from bile duct cancer, according to our sister site Variety.
“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” his partner Ben Daniels wrote on Instagram. “He was a wonderful wonderful actor, and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light.”

Gelder had a long career on the stage, appearing in productions on London’s West End and at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and he also played Mr. Dekker on Torchwood along with roles on Doctor Who and His Dark Materials. But he might be best known to TV fans as Kevan Lannister — the younger brother of Tywin and uncle to Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion — on the HBO fantasy epic Game of Thrones, making his debut in Season 1’s eighth episode.
Gelder appeared as Kevan Lannister in 12 episodes spanning Thrones’ first six seasons, often acting as a levelheaded counterweight to the Lannisters’ more power-hungry instincts. Kevan sat on the Small Council for his grand-nephew King Tommen in Season 5 and was offered the position of Master of War by Cersei after his brother Tywin’s death, but Kevan clashed with Cersei and refused the position, leaving King’s Landing in protest. Kevan later served as Hand of the King in Season 6, but was killed along with his son Lancel, Margaery Tyrell, the High Sparrow and many others in the Great Sept of Baelor when Cersei destroyed it with wildfire in the Season 6 finale.
