Groom Who Was Shot at His Wedding Is Still Sedated, But 'Vitals Are Strong'

The groom was shot by masked gunmen who entered his St. Louis, Mo., backyard, where he had been celebrating his marriage

The family of a Missouri groom who was shot in the head at his backyard wedding ceremony has shared an update on his condition, three days after the botched armed robbery.

“Francisco is still sedated while we’re waiting for the swelling to decrease,” GoFundMe organizer Jeanie Ratliff wrote in a July 2 update. “Otherwise, his vitals are strong [his wife] has been by his side every day.”

On June 29, just after 1 a.m., Francisco was shot by masked gunmen who entered his St. Louis, Mo., backyard, where he had been celebrating his marriage to Dulce Gonzalez with a small party, KSDK-TV and Fox2 reported, citing relatives and police.

St. Louis police previously said in a press release that one of the armed men was going through peoples’ pockets and the other stood behind the victim with a gun pointed at him. At some point after that, the victim was shot, police said.

According to the fundraising page set up for the family, Francisco was shot in the head and is being treated at a hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The couple share two children, who were also at the celebration. It’s not clear if the children were injured in any way.

According to KSDK-TV, Yaribeth Peña, the bride’s sister, believes the gunmen shot her brother-in-law “as he was going for his wallet and maybe they thought he was going for a weapon.”

Family members told Fox2 that the gunmen left without taking anything of value. 

Police said the suspects fled the scene on foot and that the investigation remains ongoing. No arrests have been made as of July 3.
