Guardians of the Galaxy star Ophelia Lovibond has slammed the "ridiculous" lack of interesting roles for women on screen.

The star, who is currently on our screens in W1A and played Carina in the 2014 Marvel blockbuster, lamented the "quite boring" parts for women, particularly in film, adding that she found more appealing roles on stage.

"You know that, because you're a woman, there are not going to be as many interesting roles for you – and that is frustrating," she told Digital Spy.

"It's so ridiculous – I don't have a penis, so I'm not going to get as interesting a role. But the only thing you can do is continue talking about that, and outing that, and trying to shift it – there's only so much that moaning about it will do."

She added: "The roles that have been offered to me in theatre have been these strong, feminist, dynamic roles, so that's been so, so appealing."

However, Lovibond did argue that roles were getting better, continuing: "I do feel like lately it has been improving – I see the kind of films that are out there and the women that are carrying them, and it is reassuring to see that the landscape has improved."

The actress also spoke about W1A, revealing that the current third series may be the end of the road for the BBC spoof.

"There was a bit of a gap between the second and third series, because it does take a long time to put it all together," she said.

"We all love doing it, but we got the vague sense that it was the last one [while filming]."
