Hailee Steinfeld has a tight bond with her parents Peter and Cheri Steinfeld.

The Edge of Seventeen star's dad is a fitness trainer and her mom doubles as an interior designer and Hailee's manager. Before the Oscar-nominated actress started her career, Cheri made sure that Hailee would be prepared to work in the entertainment industry.

“I went to my mom and I asked her if I could do [acting], and she made me study for a year,” she told Vanity Fair in 2010. The hard work paid off, and Hailee has continued to credit her parents for pushing her to prepare.

I would not be who I am or where I am if it weren't for my mother and my father and my brother,” Hailee told PEOPLE in 2023. “They have kept me in check every step of the way ... They have just made so many sacrifices for me to be where I'm at, and I am forever grateful.”

Hailee has a loving relationship with both her parents, and they often express their admiration for one another on social media.

“I closed my eyes for a moment and suddenly a BEAUTIFUL, STRONG, TALENTED, COURAGEOUS, LOYAL, (I could go on and on) young woman stands where a girl used to be,” Peter wrote on Instagram to celebrate Hailee’s 27th birthday. “You have given me so many reasons to be so proud of the young woman you have become, but the proudest moment for me is telling others that you are my daughter!!!!”

Peter and Cheri got married on May 24, 1992. They went on to have their first child, Griffin Steinfeld, roughly a year and a half later on Jan. 9, 1994. Hailee followed on Dec. 11, 1996.

While the younger Steinfeld went on to act, model and sing, Griffin has worked as a race car driver and owns a solar panel cleaning business. Hailee told PEOPLE in 2023 that she and Griffin have a very tight bond.

"I’m especially close with my brother, and we only get closer as we get older," she said.

Cheri is an interior designer and Hailee’s manager

Cheri held a number of jobs before settling on interior design. She has also been Hailee’s manager since she started her acting career. In celebration of Mother’s Day in 2020, Hailee interviewed Cheri for Allure, and the mom of two opened up about her life before getting married and having kids.

“I have my cosmetology license...I got my license and that really wasn't my thing,” she told Hailee. “[After that,] I became a flight attendant and I met your dad, and then I went in a whole different direction.”

Cheri admitted that meeting Peter piqued her interest in interior design. “[I] met him, got married, and got to decorate my house, and then I got into that,” she said.

Since the beginning of Hailee’s career, Cheri has been her manager. During a 2020 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a viewer asked Hailee about the pros and cons of working so closely with her mom.

“There are very few downsides,” the Golden Globe nominee said. “She’s been working with me my whole career and nobody’s got my back like my mama. She is incredible, and my best friend, so I drag her everywhere with me.”

Peter is a personal trainer

Hailee’s father is an accomplished personal trainer, with an impressive slate of clientele. After moving to California in 1978, Peter studied business and nutrition at California State University in Northridge and founded his own fitness training company, Better Shape-Up.

According to his website, Peter has trained stars including Madonna, Glenn Frey, Ozzy Osbourne and Larry David. Hailee has even tapped her dad to be her trainer when preparing for a tour or specific movie roles.

"A lot of the times he's just there as my cheerleader and major supporter but when I go to him and say like this is it tour starts in this amount of time ... he's like okay you're on no excuses and that's when I get Pete, not my dad," she told Access Hollywood of their training dynamic in 2018.

Peter has dabbled in acting

Peter appeared on three episodes of Married… with Children, a comedy series that ran from the late '80s to the late '90s. He acted in the series, led by Ed O’Neill and Christina Applegate, during its third, sixth and eighth seasons. Peter's additional credits include one episode appearances on Happy Days, Sisters and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Peter also made a brief appearance in Hailee’s music video for the 2017 song "Most Girls." In the first chorus of the video, Peter is shown coaching Hailee while she boxes.

Hailee joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Jeremy Renner-led 2021 series Hawkeye. She starred as Kate Bishop.

Hailee had to take a number of archery lessons and additional stunt training before playing Bishop so she tapped Peter to get her ready for the job.

“Before I went out to Atlanta to shoot, I was also training in L.A. on the stunt side of things with my dad, who is a personal trainer,” Hailee said in an interview for Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye: The Official Collector Special.

“We spent months on all sorts of different styles of fighting and hand-to-hand combat,” she added. “Once I had my first archery lesson, we started getting into exercises and circuits of training that would help me with those muscles.”

Growing up in the spotlight, Hailee credits her tenacity to Peter, Cheri and Griffin. At age 8, she became interested in acting and modeling after her cousin started dabbling in the industry. Cheri agreed but made sure that Hailee would be fully equipped to succeed.

“For modeling, I signed with a print agent before I signed with a theatrical agent, so I had been doing that for about a year before the acting really started to pick up for me," Hailee told Vanity Fair after receiving her Oscar nomination for True Grit.

Hailee has also shared that she “never had a problem speaking up for myself” thanks to the persistence she learned from her family members.

“It starts with my mom and my grandmother,” she told PEOPLE. “They're incredible mothers and incredible businesswomen.”
