Harry’s pain at being forced to walk behind Diana’s coffin

It was the devastating death that irrevocably changed him, and now Prince Harry has opened up about the agony he felt after he was ordered to walk behind his mum Princess Diana’s coffin.

The royal was only 12-years-old at the time of his mum’s death in 1997, with the images of him stoically walking in Diana’s funeral procession alongside his brother William, and Prince Charles, breaking hearts around the world.

“My mother had just died, and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television,” he confessed to Newsweek.

“I don't think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don't think it would happen today.”

In a candid interview with the publication, Harry explains the overwhelming memories of that time, which later saw him saw him turn to drinking, partying, and ultimately grief counseling.

Now in a place where he can talk about it, insiders say the 32-year-old royal is determined to follow in his mother’s wishes and lead as normal a life as possible.

This includes Harry doing his own grocery shopping and spending time with his girlfriend, Meghan Markle.

Those close to Harry say the Suits star has done him a world of good, and despite fevered wedding whispers, Harry is determined not to rush into things.

An insider did reveal though, that if anything happens, it will be towards “the end of the year”.

From there, it’s likely kids will be the next step, with those close to warm and energetic Harry revealing he’s a complete natural with children – unlike his “introverted” brother Wills.

“When it comes to dealing with people Harry knocks the spots off both him (William) and Kate, especially with children,” a source tells Newsweek.

“Harry is passionate about them and is a natural”.
