Hijack Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+

Hijack’s Sam might as well not bother unpacking his luggage: Apple TV+ has renewed the Idris Elba-led airline thriller for a second season, TVLine has learned.

“I was floored by the overwhelming audience response after Season 1,” Elba, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, said in a statement. “It’s top secret what new situation unfolds for Sam Nelson, but I can assure you we will bring the high octane back!”

Elba stars as Sam Nelson, a corporate negotiator whose skills of persuasion are put to the test when an airplane he’s riding on is overtaken by armed hijackers. Season 1 unfolded in real-time across seven one-hour episodes. Archie Panjabi co-starred as counter-terrorism officer Zahra, with Ben Miles as the plane’s captain Robin Allen and Eve Myles as air traffic controller Alice.

Season 2, though, might not take place on an airplane at all; there’s no word yet on what predicament Sam will find himself in this time. (Elba is the only cast member who’s confirmed to return at this point.) Elba previously told TVLine that the possibilities for additional seasons were “limited,” since Sam “isn’t a cop, he isn’t ex-military or a spy or anything like that. This is just an ordinary guy heading home, and he gets into this incredible situation. And the likelihood of lightning striking at the same spot is rare.” But he admitted that “there are ways that we can bring Sam back; I just don’t know what they are yet. But if the audience wants it, then we’ll make it happen.”

TVLine previously shared our own thoughts on a credible Season 2 storyline/crisis.

Hijack debuted on Apple TV+ in June, with the season finale premiering on Aug. 2. (Check out our full finale recap here.) It became Apple TV+’s second series (after Ted Lasso) to make Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, with 357 million minutes viewed for the week of July 31.
