“House of the Dragon ”Debuts New Opening Credits in Season 2 Premiere

Ramin Djawadi's score remains the tune of the credits, but a detailed tapestry now opens the episodes for season 2 of the 'Game of Thrones' prequel series

House of the Dragon is back — and season 2 kicked off with something new.

The June 16 premiere episode of the Game of Thrones prequel series started with a new set of opening credits, which came as a surprise to many fans, as the original HBO series' opening credits remained mostly consistent throughout its eight seasons.

While the locations featured would vary by season in Game of Thrones' opening credits, the overall look of the credits remained the same; however, House of the Dragon has established a new style for its second season though the tune of the credits remains Ramin Djawadi's score.

The season 2 opening credits show the Targaryen family's story in a beautiful, detailed embroidery, as blood flows throughout the tapestry to showcase various locations, dragons and plenty of platinum white-haired dragon riders.

The credits also featured the House of Targaryen symbol, a rendering of Kings Landing and depictions of several scenes from the show's first season.

Among the scenes included were the events of the show's premiere, when King Viserys (Paddy Considine) was chosen to inherit the Iron Throne over Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best), as well as a depiction of younger Rhaenyra as portrayed by Milly Alcock, in the first five episodes of season 1, standing across from an older Rhaneyra (Emma D'Arcy).

The main similarity between the new opening credits and the first season's is the blood that flows from scene to scene. In season 1, though, the blood flowed to create the Targaryen family tree, rather than depicting scenes in a tapestry.

Season 2 will see the Targaryen's descend into the civil war that George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel details, as the "Greens" sit on the Iron Throne and the "Blacks" vie for it.

It picks up following the devastating events of the season 1 finale, which saw Rhaenyra's son, Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), and his dragon killed by Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Vhagar. The loss is war-igniting for Rhaenyra, who was already enraged by her half-brother Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney)'s wrongful ascension to the throne following the death of King Viserys (Considine).

Aegon is "floundering" in season 2, Glynn-Carney told PEOPLE at the New York City premiere earlier this month, after he was "thrown into the fray, headfirst, unable to swim" as he ascended the throne.

However, the actor noted that it's also "the first time we've seen Aegon with purpose."

"He's never had purpose before. He gets p-----, he stays in bed until midday, he gets p----- again and he does the same thing the next day. So this is the first time he's had a reason to get out of bed," Glynn-Carney, 29, said. "And he's a family man now, or the closest to his version of a family man."

As for Aemond, Mitchell, 27, told PEOPLE that the first season "stablished this family's world on a knife's edge and all it was going to take was a push from either side to draw blood."

"And Aemond drew first blood, so he becomes the most wanted man in the realm. And come season two, you're going to see the most wanted man in the realm," he continued.

The premiere of House of the Dragon season 2 is now streaming on Max, and new episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
