Fatherhood has provided comedian Jim Gaffigan with plenty of material.

The actor, who is a father of five, shares children Marre, 20, Jack, 18, Katie, 15, Michael, 12 and Patrick, 11, with his wife Jeannie Gaffigan. He joked on X (formerly Twitter) in April 2013 that the “hardest part of parenting is when I’m with my kids.”

“I have five because I’m secretly starting my own nationality,” Jim joked with PEOPLE in 2016. He added that each of his kids “has made me a more decent person and a better person, and based on that, all I would need is 34 more to be a decent guy.”

Jokes aside, it’s “fun chaos” for Jim. “I come from a big family and my wife comes from a big family,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of value in sibling chaos. But it’s a lot of organizing, it’s like a circus.”

Jim previously told PEOPLE in 2022 that he is "constantly surprised" by how much he learns from his children.

From how they've followed in his footsteps to their individual talents, here's everything to know about Jim Gaffigan’s five kids.

Marre is Jim and Jeannie’s eldest child. Marre was born on May 2, 2004, in their family home.

Jim’s firstborn, who uses they/them pronouns, has been open about their support for the LGBTQ+ community, occasionally sharing posts on their Instagram of themself attending Pride events.

“As an advocate for this community, I cannot explain how happy I am to live and be surrounded by such a beautiful and accepting family," they wrote in the caption of one post in 2019. "I have found safety in every person that doesn’t care what I identify or don’t identify as, and that is all I can ever ask for."

Jim has called his oldest child a "social justice warrior." "[Marre] educates me on things without a sense of judgment, which is amazing," the comedian told PEOPLE in 2022.

In 2016, Marre played a teenage version of their dad’s sister, Pam, on The Jim Gaffigan Show.

Years later, in June 2022, Marre graduated from high school in New York City. Jim marked the special occasion with a post praising Marre for the person they had become.

“I’m so proud of my Marre. [They] graduated high school today but I’m most impressed with the person [they have] become,” he wrote. “So grateful to be related to this incredible human.”

The following fall, Marre started college at Georgetown University where they seem to be following in their father's footsteps as an actor. They starred in productions such as Pippin in April 2024.

Jack Gaffigan, 18

Jim and Jeannie’s second child, Jack, was born on Nov. 27, 2005. Like Marre, Jack was born at home.

When he was 10 years old, Jack played a young version of his father on The Jim Gaffigan Show.

Jack has taken after his comedian father, even opening up for his shows on occasion as a teenager. The duo even have an “obligatory ‘slap’ bit,” according to Jim.

In 2022, Jim admitted to PEOPLE that he is "constantly surprised" by how funny his eldest son is, adding that Jack "truly is one of the funniest people" he knows.

"I've lived with him for 16 years. I've seen him be funny, consistently quickly. He doesn't struggle with it," he said.

At the time of the interview, Jack had recently performed at an arena in front of 7,000 people. Jim noted that it was "the biggest venue" of his son's career to date. "I didn't assume, I didn't pressure him to wanting to pursue stand up," Jim told PEOPLE. "I mean, he's also 16. He wants to do it now. But, when he's 18, he might be like, 'I'm never doing it.' ”

Jim and Jeannie welcomed their third child, daughter Katie Louise Gaffigan, on May 10, 2009, in N.Y.C. Following her arrival, Jim’s rep told PEOPLE, “The family is home, healthy, and happily enjoying the new addition to their family."

Jeannie has referred to her younger daughter as a “clearly supernatural gift” and “a direct answer to my prayers," meanwhile Jim has described Katie to PEOPLE as "a true rebel."

In a post to celebrate Katie’s 12th birthday in 2022, the mom of five wrote, “12 years ago today I received the greatest Mother’s Day gift of all times. My beautiful, bright, brilliantly funny, unsinkable Katherine Louise.”

Though Katie is still a teenager, she's already expressed interest in musical theater. In 2019, Jeannie posted a video of Katie “channeling her inner” Sutton Foster as she performed a musical number.

That same year, Katie joined her father and Marre at the movie premiere of Cats in N.Y.C.

Michael Gaffigan, 12

The Gaffigan family grew by one on June 19, 2011, with the birth of Michael. Jim joked on his Mr. Universe special, “If you wanna know what it’s like to have a fourth, just imagine you’re drowning, and then someone hands you a baby.”

As with his older siblings, Michael was born at home. As he's grown up, Jim joked on CBS Sunday Morning in May 2021 that Mikey likes him “so much, it makes me kind of question his judgment.”

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2022, Jim said Michael is "way more athletic than anyone in our family." Like his siblings, Michael has joined his dad at various events. In 2018, Michael was red-carpet ready with his family at the screening of Mary Poppins Returns in N.Y.C.

Together, Jim and Michael, as well as his younger brother Patrick, enjoy harvesting vegetables in their garden. In July 2023, Jim shared some of the crops they grew including radishes and carrots.

Patrick Gaffigan, 11

The youngest member of the Gaffigan family arrived on Sept. 27, 2012. Jeannie reflected on his birth in an Instagram tribute for his 8th birthday in 2020, sharing that Patrick was her “stubborn breech baby who turned at the last minute for a beautiful birth.”

She also wrote that her “baby” brings “such joy to us” and thanked Patrick “for making the number 5 so special to our family!” Jeannie described her son as “tough as nails, funny and smart and constantly adorable.”

Jim told PEOPLE in 2022 that his youngest child "surprises" him with the "insane" level of knowledge he has on "scientific things."

In a clip for CBS Sunday Morning, Jim called Patrick his “mini-me” who seems to "have the same view of humanity” as him.
