Former President Jimmy Carter made a second appearance outside his home this week to mourn his late wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.

On Wednesday Jimmy, 99, attended an intimate funeral service in Plains, Georgia, limited to family and close friends. Jimmy wore a red lei, an apparent nod to the cherished time he and Rosalynn spent in Hawaii when Jimmy was in the Navy.

Hosted by Maranatha Baptist Church — where Jimmy taught Sunday school for many years after his presidency — the service marks the last commemorative event of the week before Rosalynn is interred at the Carter's longtime family residence.

Jimmy has spent most of the year in hospice care at home, unable to see outside visitors. His appearance at Rosalynn's star-studded tribute service in Atlanta on Tuesday allowed the public a rare glimpse of the nation's 39th president.

At the Atlanta service, he wore a blanket bearing his and Rosalynn's faces, and sat in the front row with two of his children on each side. Also in the front row were President Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton and every living U.S. first lady — Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, Melania Trump and Jill Biden.

Rosalynn was married to Jimmy for nearly eight decades, and served as the nation's barrier-breaking first lady during his White House tenure from 1977 to 1981. She was diagnosed with dementia in May, and entered hospice care two days before her death on Nov. 19 at the age of 96.

In addition to Jimmy, Rosalynn is survived by her four children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy — and numerous grandchildren and great-children.
