Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift's private romance was intentional, according to the actor.

The 33-year-old Kinds of Kindness star told The Sunday Times Style in a new interview that he and the “Fortnight” singer, 34, had agreed to keep the “details” of their romance “private” when they were together.

"As everyone knows, we together — both of us, mutually — decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private,” Alwyn said. “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.”

“And, look, this is also a little over a year ago now and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life, professionally and personally. I feel really good,” he added.

When asked by the publication if he's heard Swift's latest album, The Tortured Poets Department — which fans believe may be made up of material inspired by the former couple's breakup — Alwyn said, “In thinking on what I was going to say, I would think and hope that anyone and everyone can empathize. … This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but just thinking about what I want to talk about."

The Catherine Called Birdy actor also did not discuss whether he is still in touch with Swift or seeing someone new, citing his previous high-profile relationship with the Grammy winner.

“I’m sure you can appreciate, given the level of noise and scrutiny about my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to things like that right now,” Alwyn told the Times.

A source previously told PEOPLE after the pair split that Alwyn was “dating and happy.” The insider also noted that the actor had “moved on” from Swift and “certainly doesn’t talk poorly about her," adding, “He was in love with her, and it just didn’t work out.”

Alwyn and Swift's split after six years of dating was largely due to “differences in their personalities," a source close to the former couple told PEOPLE at the time.

The couple were first linked in May 2017. Their first public appearance together came a year later in 2018. In an August 2019 interview, the "Anti-Hero" singer told The Guardian of Alwyn: "Our relationship isn't up for discussion."

Still, Swift has provided some insight over the years into dating in the public eye, including on her Midnights album, which she released prior to her break up with Alwyn.

She previously described her song "Lavender Haze" as a reference to the challenges they faced while together.

"My relationship for six years, we've had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it," she said in a since-deleted Instagram video about the song.

Since the breakup, Swift has been dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
