Julie Goodwin spills on future reality TV shows after MasterChef

Since winning the inaugural season of MasterChef in 2009, national treasure Julie Goodwin has remained a consistent presence on Australian reality TV.

In 2012 she returned to the cooking competition for MasterChef All-Stars - a series she jokingly refers to as “the forgotten child” in the franchise - and three years later she appeared on the first season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

Chatting with Yahoo Lifestyle following her recent elimination on season 14 of MasterChef, titled Fans & Favourites, the mother-of-three reflected on her impressive TV career and future opportunities.

“You know what, I remember being asked to go on I’m A Celebrity and that was the first season so we didn't have a reference point,” she remarks.

“So they sent me some clips of the British one to have a look at to see if I wanted to do it, and I was watching it with horror with my husband Mick and I just said to him, ‘Oh god Mick, I’d never do this!’. And he went, ‘Yes you will’, and I went, ‘Okay, alright, I’ll say yes then!’.

“At the end of the day, Mick and I have got a pact - we won’t die wondering. So if somebody comes to me with some other crazy scheme, then no doubt I will give it a crack.”

Julie, who released an album of traditional Christmas songs back in 2010, went on to reveal if she would ever want to appear on an upcoming season of The Masked Singer.

“I think I’m getting a bit long in the tooth for a musical career,” she laughs, before adding, “But anything's possible!”

'No regrets'

Speaking about her decision to join this year’s season of MasterChef, Julie admits she had no expectations about how she’d perform.

“Going into it I honestly didn't know how it was going to roll, whether I was going to step up and be a contender or whether I would just be there and sort of wave hi to everybody and say, ‘Wow, this is far further than I can go’ and step out pretty quickly,” she shares.

“I just know that if you're going to do something, you give it everything you've got so that you can walk away without any regrets. And that is honestly what's happened. I have no regrets that I've left in fifth place because I know in my heart that I did my very best.”

She adds that the remaining contestants - Billie McKay, Daniel Lamble, Keyma Vasquez Montero and Sarah Todd - are all “brilliant cooks” and “worthy winners”.

“I love the idea that somebody else now will get to sort of raise that trophy and have the experience of being the MasterChef winner,” she says.

“It feels appropriate to me and it feels fair that I've had this amazing part of my life for 13 years because I happened to be the lucky person who won the first season, and now I get to step back and handover and just watch with great joy and great love the remaining four battle it out.”
