Katy Perry’s hacked micro-fringe haircut looks like one of Edward Scissorhands' iconic creations

Katy Perry graced the Jimmy Kimmel Live show in LA this week and broke some pretty big news. No, we're not talking about her revealing she's leaving American Idol after seven seasons on the show, having joined the judging panel in 2018. No no. We're talking about debuting her new micro-fringe.

Along with an elaborate 90s-style piecey updo, the star debuted a short, choppy micro-fringe sandwiched between two jaw-length face-framing tendrils. And it looks so good. The work of celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero – a favourite of Kylie Jenner, Rosalia, Alex Demie and numerous other particularly cool celebs – it's not a surprise that this look is a balance of arty grunge and glamorous feminine energy.

The creativity kind of reminds us of the stunning creations Edwards Scissorhands whipped up during his stint as a hair stylist. But well, a little more symmetrical.

The choppy fringe is super short with a hacked feathery edge, but worn with a vintage curl and bounce that we so associate with Katy, making the style totally her.

We've seen micro fringes on everyone from Camila Cabello to Ashley Graham to Kourtney Kardashian to Em Rata, and we expect to see a lot more of them in 2024. Whether they'll make it into the mainstream is yet to be seen, as they can be quite daunting to pull off. But hey, with great PR like this number from Perry, we think people will be coming around to the idea.

Oh and as for her other news? She's simply leaving to do something different; "I love ‘Idol’ so much, it’s connected me with the heart of America," she told Kimmel. "But I feel like I need to go out to feel that pulse of my own beat."

The fringe is the start.
