King Charles Attends Church Alongside Queen Camilla for the 1st Time Since Beginning Cancer Treatment

The King shared his cancer diagnosis on Monday and began treatment the same day

King Charles has made his first public outing since beginning cancer treatment earlier this week.

The 75-year-old monarch appeared alongside Queen Camilla on Sunday as they attended a church service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk, and gave a wave to photographers as he made his way to church with Camilla, 76.

Wearing a smart tan jacket and grey pants, the King held a blue umbrella and smiled at onlookers as he walked alongside his wife, who wore a white jacket and black hat, and Reverend Canon Dr. Paul Williams.

King Charles addressed his cancer diagnosis for the first time on Saturday in a statement released by Buckingham Palace as he thanked the public for their well-wishes and support.

"I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days," the monarch began. "As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement."

King Charles spoke of feeling “heartened” by the positive impact going public with his cancer diagnosis has had on bringing awareness to the disease and to organizations supporting cancer patients and families across the world.

"My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience," he concluded in the statement.

On Feb. 5, the palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. The announcement came a week after the King’s three-day hospital stay for surgery for an enlarged prostate. The exact nature of the cancer has not been disclosed at this time.

The palace said in the statement at the time: "During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer."

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual," it continued.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible."

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer," the statement said.

King Charles’ church visit comes days after his son Prince Harry flew into the U.K. for a brief trip to speak with him following the announcement of the monarch's cancer diagnosis.

After arriving in London on Tuesday from Los Angeles, Harry reportedly visited King Charles and Queen Camilla at Clarence House, where they live in London, for a private meeting.

A source later told PEOPLE of the family reunion, "That is good. Hopefully [Harry] will bring the grandchildren at some point too, as that would be lovely for all of them.”
