“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” Sets At-Home Release Date, Including an Epic New Alternative Cut (Exclusive)

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will soon take over fans' living rooms.

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that 20th Century Studios will release the latest in the action-adventure franchise on digital retailers on July 9, then on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 27.

The 4K UHD edition features a full-length alternative cut of the film that, through split-screen presentation, shows the final film side by side with a version showing unfinished visual effects to highlight the actors' performances under the CGI.

Titled "Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut," the alternative cut has an optional audio commentary by director Wes Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman and VFX supervisor Erik Winquist.

Additional bonus features include 14 deleted and extended scenes, and a behind-the-scenes documentary called Inside the Forbidden Zone: Making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

A continuation of the futuristic saga, Kingdom is set several generations after Caesar’s reign, when apes live on Earth as the dominant species and humans exist on the fringes, as another clash is brewing.

The film's cast includes Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon and William H. Macy.

Teague, 25, recently told PEOPLE he isn't frustrated about his human face not appearing onscreen as he portrays the lead chimp, Noa, using motion-capture technology.

"It's what I try to do regardless of who I'm playing, whether or not I'm a human," he said. "You want to disappear. I want to become whoever I am playing. I don't want people to see me onscreen; I want them to see the character."
