Klay Thompson goes off for 16 4th quarter points in win over Lakers

Sorry to the rest of the NBA, but Klay Thompson is very much starting to look like his old self.

The Golden State Warriors All-Star had his biggest night since returning from his two-year injury layoff on Saturday, posting 33 points on 12-of-22 shooting (5-of-9 from deep) in a 117-115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Sixteen of those points came in the fourth quarter, which saw a slugfest with a Lakers team desperate to show they can right the ship after an inactive trade deadline, effectively doubling down on a roster that has so far posted a 26-31 record.

Thompson did not seem to care for what the Lakers needed.

The performance was the first time Thompson had scored north of 30 points in three seasons. If the Warriors want to return to their old dominant form, they'll need nights like this from Thompson, where he can torch teams from everywhere on the court.

Thompson's performance so far this season hasn't been at his old level, but he has still impressed when you consider he had spent the last two years rehabbing from an ACL tear and Achilles tear. Entering Saturday, he had been averaging 16.7 points per game, his lowest total since his second season, and shooting a career-low 37.4 percent from 3-point range.

He had been picking up steam, though, with 19 points per game and 41.2 percent 3-point shooting in his last six games.

The good news for the Warriors is that even with Thompson being a work in progress, even with Green out for a few more weeks, they're still one of the best teams in the NBA. Their 41-15 record ranks only behind the Phoenix Suns for best in the league, and you can only imagine what will happen if they're firing on all cylinders when the playoffs roll around.
