A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Has ‘Much Different Tone’ From Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin Says
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be a departure from its predecessors in at least one major way, according to George R.R. Martin.
HBO’s upcoming Dunk-and-Egg spinoff “will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone,” author and executive producer Martin posted Wednesday on his blog. “But it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe.”

The series is based on some of Martin’s novellas, which follow Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey, Bad Sisters) and his young squire, Egg (played by Dexter Sol Ansell, ITV’s Emmerdale), who in the books find themselves enmeshed in adventures with smaller stakes than Game of Thrones or its prequel series.
Per the official logline, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is “set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory” and “great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.
Martin also reported that many of the series’ roles had been cast (including that of Tanselle, who catches Dunk’s eye at a tournament) and hinted that Season 1 of the offshoot would deal with the events of his first Dunk-and-Egg novella, The Hedge Knight.
“The show will make its debut next year,” he wrote, “and if it does well, [Novella #2] The Sworn Sword and [Novella #3] The Mystery Knight will follow. By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish The Winds of Winter).”
The Winds of Winter, as Martin fans know, is the title of the long-awaited sixth novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Its publication date has not yet been determined.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was formally announced in April 2023. The series will be written and executive-produced by Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, who currently serves as House of the Dragon‘s showrunner, Owen Harris, Sarah Bradshaw and Vince Gerardis also will be EPs. It is slated to premiere in June 2025.
