Jaylin Joiner, an 18-year-old high school student at Carencro High School, was shot while exiting his school bus, police said, according to KATC-TV, KLFY-TV and KADN News 15.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office told KATC-TV that officers responded to a report of a shooting that occurred shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, March 1, and when they arrived on the scene they found Jaylin with a gunshot wound.

“We are all devastated by [the] loss of Jaylin, a young man taken from us too soon to a senseless act of violence, gunned down on the school bus,” Boudreaux wrote on the website. “Jaylin was heading for only the best in life, going to school, working, and helping with his siblings.”

On Monday, a candlelight vigil was held in memory of Jaylin by several members of the community and lawmakers. Carencro Mayor Charlotte Clavier described the incident as “very shocking to the community,” per KATC-TV,

“I pray for those students and the bus driver on that bus,” she continued, per the outlet. “This is a beautiful community, and we are not accustomed to this here.”

The shooting is still under investigation by police. Officers told KATC-TV that they expect additional arrests will be made.
