Lana Del Rey's 'useless' face mask causes a stir

Lana Del Rey has caused a social media storm after wearing a see-through mesh face mask to a surprise book signing in Los Angeles.

The singer had released a physical version of her poetry collection Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass earlier this week, and could been seen interacting with her fans and taking selfies at a Barnes & Noble in outdoor mall the Grove.

LA county asks people to wear a cloth face covering when interacting with people out of their household in both public and private spaces, during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While the majority of people present, from her own team to the fans that came to the event, could be seen wearing such masks, Lana chose to wear the same mesh mask she had on for a recent Interview Magazine cover, which sparked criticism for not being an effective, safe face covering.

Her fans took to social media to slam the choice of mask as ‘useless’ and ‘irresponsible’.

“I love you Lana but that mask is useless,” one person wrote on Instagram.

“Notice how no one else’s mask looks like yours 😐,” another pointed out.

“Please girl get a real mask 🙄 making me feel ashamed to be a fan right now,” was another comment.

While a fourth lashed out on Twitter: “I cant belive Lana is actually wearing this mask to.....socially interact with people.. this is so irresponsible.”

There were however some that defended the singer, including her sister Caroline 'Chuck' Grant, who quickly hit back at the furious fans.

“She stayed six feet apart, and she tested negative,” Carline tweeted.

While another person said: “Well we all know her intentions are of course not bad here. Honestly I blame management.”

Others argued she had a clear protective mask underneath the mesh covering, which has however not been confirmed by the star.

“Guys, the mask has a translucent layer underneath the mesh. Calm down.”

According to a later post on Twitter, the event actually ended up getting shut down by the health department.

Back in June Lana Del Rey had also come under fire from supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, after posting a ‘dangerous’ video to her social media.

The star shared footage of some of the explosive protests and riots which have erupted in the United States in the aftermath of the death of African American man George Floyd at the hands of police.

The video was deleted after it garnered extensive criticism for clearly identifying the protesters on such a mammoth platform, a move many slammed as ‘dangerous’.
