Lanterns: Damon Lindelof Among Writers of DC’s Green Lantern Series, James Gunn Confirms
Damon Lindelof is wading back into DC Comics waters.
As confirmed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, Lindelof — who previously created 2019’s acclaimed Watchmen miniseries — is among the writers of DC’s in-the-works Green Lantern TV series, titled Lanterns.

“Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof,” Gunn shared in a Threads post on Saturday, after eagle-eyed fans began to notice Lanterns listed under Lindelof’s work on his official Writers Guild of America profile. “A hearty welcome to Chris and @damonlindelof as they join the DC Studios family (no welcome necessary for old [King], who has been here nearly since inception).”
Lindelof, of course, is also known for his behind-the-camera work on series like Lost and The Leftovers, while Mundy previously served as showrunner on Ozark. King, meanwhile, is a DC veteran, having written several comic books for the company.
Lanterns was first announced in January 2023, when Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran unveiled their initial plans for 10 films and TV shows coming to the rebooted DC Universe. At the time, Safran described the project as “a huge, HBO-quality event” that is “very much in the vein of True Detective.” It will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart — two characters who appear as Green Lantern in DC’s comics — as they investigate a mystery that, per Safran, will play a “really big role” in the extended DCU’s central story.
This series, however, is not to be confused with another Green Lantern project that was previously in the works at Max. That attempt, shepherded by Greg Berlanti and Arrow/Legends of Tomorrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim, would have starred Treadstone‘s Jeremy Irvine as the very first Green Lantern, Alan Scott, and American Horror Story‘s Finn Wittrock as cocky alpha male Guy Gardner. The project was ultimately scrapped before Gunn and Safran took over as DC bosses, which Gunn acknowledged in a Threads post earlier this year.
“I didn’t think [the original Green Lantern series] was in the DCEU, but it was before my time,” Gunn told a user who was dismayed about the Berlanti series’ status. “That said, I think Finn’s a [talented] guy and he’ll be okay! Writers, directors, actors have projects fall through every day. We’ve all had it happen many times. It’s not being ‘done dirty,’ it’s a part of the job.”
Chapter 1 of the DCU — dubbed “Gods and Monsters” by Gunn and Safran — officially launches with the animated series Creature Commandos, hitting Max in late 2024. On the film side, things will kick off with Superman, starring David Corenswet (The Politician) as the Man of Steel and releasing on July 11, 2025.
