'Lazy' driver fined $42,000 after being pulled over during routine check

In addition to speeding, the NSW truck driver was found to be in breach of a whole range of other offences.

An Aussie truck driver has been slapped with a whopping $42,000 worth of fines after being found to be in breach of multiple offences during a routine check.

The man, from Wagga Wagga in the NSW Riverina region, was stopped at 11.30am on Friday, February 2, by officers conducting speed enforcement checks in Walgett, when he was found to be travelling more than 10 kilometres per hour above the legal speed limit.

Police say the man was travelling 64km/h in a 50 zone and, when officers asked the man to produce a work diary, he was immediately found to be in breach of multiple heavy vehicle offences.

Having already been warned by officers previously about his conduct on the road, police say the man was given multiple weeks to correct his diary, but still failed to do so.

Man told police he was too 'busy' to amend work diary

He told police he was "busy" and was "going to do it later", adding that he was "lazy" and planned to correct the diary "on the weekend".

Police seized the diary for analysis and the man was charged with three counts of working more than the maximum standard time, not keeping adequate records, not recording prescribed information in a written work diary, and four counts of not recording information after starting work, among others.

He was further issued a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit, carrying a $546 fine and a loss three demerit points. On Tuesday March 26, the matter was before Walgett Local Court where the driver was convicted of all offences and was ordered to pay a monetary penalty totalling $42,000.
