The likely cause of death of four teenage boys who were found dead in a car during a camping trip accident in the U.K. has been revealed.

At an inquest into the high school students' deaths on Wednesday, a coroner said the provisional cause of death was drowning, according to the BBC.

Police in Wales previously said the bodies of Wilf Fitchett, Jevon Hirst, Harvey Owen and Hugo Morris, who were aged between 16 and 18, had been recovered from a vehicle that appeared to have left the road in a statement shared on Facebook.

The car was found upside down and partially submerged in a body of water on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Per The Guardian, Kate Robertson, senior coroner for north-west Wales, told the inquest, “The four young men were traveling in a vehicle along the A4085 at Llanfrothen when the vehicle has left the road. The circumstances of which resulted in the deaths of all four occupants."

"Postmortem examinations have been undertaken and the provisional causes of death provided, pending inquests.”

Robertson added that the police investigation was "ongoing,” per the BBC. “Only when it's complete, will a full inquest take place," she said at the inquest, which was not attended by any of the teenagers’ families reported the outlet. “At this time, speculation is unhelpful and compassion will achieve more than media curiosity.”

No date has been set for the full hearings, according to The Guardian.

Following the accident, Harvey Owen's mom, Crystal, shared on Facebook that she felt like she was “in a nightmare I wish I could wake up from but I’m not.”

"I just wanted to say I do appreciate people’s kindness but no amount of messages is going to help me overcome this. Nothing will make this nightmare go away," she added.

Wilf Fitchett’s girlfriend Maddi Corfield also honored her boyfriend’s life on social media. "I'm going to miss you forever,” she wrote on Instagram, according to the BBC and Sky News, calling him, "The sweetest and most loving boy I've ever known.”

"I can't imagine my world without you,” Corfield added. “I'm missing you so much already, but I am going to enjoy life the way you would've wanted, the way that you made me feel."

It's believed the boys, who were from the same school in England, were camping in the Eryri area of Wales, also known as Snowdonia. They were reported missing on Sunday 19. Nov.

The coroner's office for north-west Wales did not immediately reply to PEOPLE's request for comment.
