Last night, hosting an event with YSL Beauty in New York, the 21-year-old opted against the recent vogue for barrel leg jeans or cargo-style pants to instead opt for a second-skin pair of denim jeans marking the return of the largely MIA ankle-huggers.
Lila's look is enough to remind even those of us that swore off skinnies on their simple, day-to-night appeal. Keeping things as fuss free as her jeans's silhouette, she opted to wear them with a simple sheer knitted vest and a neat buckle belt by Saint Laurent, complete with a pair of pointed stilettos befitting her rising supermodel status. The composition of the pieces together reminded us of the ease of skinny jeans where they continue to fast-track cool and now pick up a fresh retro context that speaks of the continuing obsession with all things millennium-era.
Of course, it makes sense their return should be ushered in by a Moss. The popularity of the style is perhaps the family's greatest sartorial legacy, with mum Kate being the reason they become the style du jour at the close of the 2000s and never really left our wardrobes until a few short years ago. And now after what seems like a mere blink of an eye they're back.
Here at ELLE UK HQ, the verdict is out. To wear skinny jeans in 2024 means to take on a greater caution and care than perhaps we observed 20 years ago. Now, they're best worn super-smart and immaculate in dark, indigo denim washes that speak of supermodel polish rather than torn rock'n'roll cool. Make like Lila and add a pair of sky-high heels (or neat kitten heels) and streamline everything else for 2024's way to wear them. Will you?
