Major European arms manufacturer enters Ukrainian market

The Franco-German arms group KNDS will establish a branch in Ukraine

The French-German conglomerate KNDS announced the creation of an enterprise in Ukraine during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to France on June 7, reports Le Figaro.

The creation of the enterprise was announced by the defense ministers of France and Germany in March. During President Zelenskyy's visit, a contract was formalized for the transfer of licensed production of 155 mm projectiles to Ukraine.

The subsidiary will produce military equipment and ammunition in Ukraine, according to French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

Earlier, Lecornu stated that three French defense companies would establish partnerships with Ukrainian enterprises for the production of military equipment in Ukraine.

KNDS, one of Europe's largest arms conglomerates, was founded by Germany's KMW and France's Nexter. Its portfolio includes main battle tanks, armored vehicles, artillery installations, ammunition, and bridge-builders, with flagship products being Leopard tanks and Caesar self-propelled artillery.

On April 24, President Joe Biden signed a bill providing $61 billion in support for Ukraine, which the House of Representatives had delayed for several months. Immediately after signing, Biden announced that the U.S. would begin supplying weapons from the aid package to Ukraine within hours. The Pentagon reported that the $1 billion aid package includes air defense missiles, ammunition for HIMARS MLRS, 155 mm artillery shells, Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, Humvee armored vehicles, and high-precision aviation ammunition.

On May 10, the U.S. announced a new $400 million aid package to Ukraine, which included ammunition for Patriot air defense systems, NASAMS, additional HIMARS MLRS with ammunition, Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, and M113 armored personnel carriers.

On May 24, amid the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv Oblast, the U.S. announced another military aid package to Ukraine worth $275 million.
