'What match were you watching?': Federer's funny exchange with journo

Roger Federer has taken a cheeky crack at a reporter after a question left him very confused.

The Swiss great, chasing his seventh title at Melbourne Park, downed party boy Daniel Evans 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 in round two on Wednesday.

The thrilling match was offset by a number of light-hearted exchanges between Federer and Evans, most notably when a baby started crying as Federer was about to serve in the first set.

“Are you happy?” Evans asked Federer about playing during the noise.

“I’m ok if you’re ready to go,” Federer replied rather politely.

But it appears Federer didn’t even hear the baby crying and was rather perplexed when he was asked about it in his post-match press conference.

“There was a baby crying?” he replied. “No, there were no babies.”

“I’m not sure what match you were watching. Were you watching centre court?

“I’m joking of course.”

Federer actually thought the journo was referring to his conversation about Evans about whether or not they should keep playing while light rain fell.

Federer actually lost his temper over the inclement weather, flinging a terse remark at chair umpire Marijana Veljovic, who asked if the court was still playable when rain started to fall.

“It’s always playable until a leg gets broken. I’d rather wait a little bit”, the world No.3 said.

The win means Federer has more singles victories at the Australian Open than Wimbledon – 96 compared to 95 at the All-England club.

He’ll meet Taylor Fritz for a place in the fourth round after the young American beat Frenchman Gael Monfils, the 30th seed, in four sets.
