What it Means to Be a Fire Sign, According to an Astrologer

Aries, Leos, and Sagittarians of the world, listen up: you may know that you're bold, passionate, driven, and often the center of attention, but do you have any idea why? While knowing your zodiac sign—also referred to as your sun sign—will illuminate individual personality traits you may have based on when you were born, there's more to astrology than that. Another extremely important thing to understand is the meaning of your astrology element.

"Astrology uses various ways to describe the zodiac signs," astrologer Lisa Stardust tells HelloGiggles. "One way to classify the signs is by the four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, and Water). Each element represents an essential part of life, which is interchangeable with the others, meaning they all are essential parts of the world we live in."

Zodiac signs that fall into the same element tend to have similar personality traits as well as similar ways of relating to the world. As we head into Leo season on July 23rd, we talked to Stardust about what it means to be a fire sign and what you should know if you're an Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius.

What it means to be a fire sign

Like the element of fire itself, these three signs are known to burn brightly. When they find a new project or person to be excited about, fire signs will stop at nothing until they reach their desired outcome. But just as quickly as the flame ignites, it can go out—fire signs are also known for getting bored easily.

"Fire signs aren’t reflective, they are doers," Stardust says. "They take action of a situation, rather than talking or feeling it."

You can find many fire signs in managerial roles or leading teams because they like calling the shots. Aries, for example, is guided by Mars, making them an extremely motivated sign who is confident in taking charge. Aries is also a quick thinker, preferring to go with their gut when it comes to decision-making. Often Aries will seem obsessed with an idea, only to become tired of it if it proves tedious or overwhelming. Then they'll jump onto the next thing.

Fire signs also have big personalities that can make them fun at parties. Since Leos are guided by the sun, they are known for being the center of attention. They love putting on a show for anyone who will watch and thrive in crowds.

There is also an adventurous spirit inherent in fire signs. Sagittarius is the best example of this. Like the other fire signs, Sagittarius often gets restless and feels the need to move on to something new and exciting. As a result, Sag will travel the world to find novel experiences outside of what they know.

Who fire signs are compatible with

Because fire signs are quick to action and want partners who can keep up, they often go for other fire signs. According to Stardust, when fire signs are together, they make things happen quickly, which is their ultimate goal.

Depending on where a fire sign is in life, they may only want a fling for the moment. While Leos are known to be very loyal and thrive in long-term relationships, Sagittarius and Aries sometimes have issues being tied down. Aries can be very hot and heavy with a partner from the jump, but after awhile, their feelings may cool down and disappear. Sagittarius often doesn't like the idea of commitment because it limits them from picking up and leaving for their next adventure. If they do choose a partner, it will be someone who has the same traveling spirit.

Fire signs can also find happiness with air signs "because air signs can help fire signs see their potential and add wind to their sails to help them be more successful in their endeavors," Stardust says. Air signs—Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius—are intellectuals who make decisions based on reasoning rather than emotion. Because they let fire signs have the freedom they need—and share their desires—they often make for a good match.
