Jewel is a proud mother to her son, Kase.

The “You Were Meant For Me” singer welcomed her only child in July 2011 with her then-husband Ty Murray. Though the two split three years later, they maintain an amicable co-parenting relationship.

Now that Kase is about to enter his teenage years, Jewel told PEOPLE in May 2024 that her approach to motherhood has “changed a lot over the years.”

"I'm a lot more present. I think I'm a present mom now, which I really worked hard on. It wasn't easy in the beginning for me to be really present," she said.

Like his mother, Kase has developed a strong talent for singing but doesn’t seem to have an interest in following Jewel’s footsteps into the industry.

"He's not obsessed with it, so I don't know if that'll be his thing, but he sure has a natural gift,” she told PEOPLE in September 2023.

From his passions to his relationship with his mom, here’s everything to know about Jewel’s son.

He was born in July 2011

Jewel and Murray announced the birth of their son, Kase Townes Murray, on July 11, 2011, in Texas. Kase weighed in at 7 lbs., 6 oz. and was born at 7 p.m.

“Ty and I are so pleased to welcome our new baby boy into the world,” Jewel told PEOPLE at the time. “We are overcome with happiness – it really is as great as everyone told us it would be – better even!”

She stepped away from music to raise him

After giving birth to her son, Jewel released an album in 2016, Lullaby, and took a five-year break before releasing an album in 2021, Queen of Hearts. In May 2023, she explained on Instagram — alongside a slideshow video of photos of her son — that the reason she stepped away from music was to focus on motherhood.

“I weep seeing these pictures of my son and I because I fought for this right,” she wrote in the caption. “I fought to figure out how to grow in my purpose as an artist - and as a person dedicated to helping others- and not letting it cost me my connection to my son.”

On top of the video, she wrote that Kase was her “greatest work of art.”

She helps him navigate his feelings

In May 2021, Jewel shared on the Allison Interviews podcast that Kase is “very emotional,” and she was learning not to “over empower” his feelings.

"My son is a very emotional child. He is very creative. Something I've really been working on with my son is differentiating between a genuine emotion and a reaction," she said.

"For me, it has been going back and really studying masculinity among indigenous cultures; the rites of passage from a male perspective, and not putting my female perspective on it," Jewel continued. "But instead, learning about masculinity in an indigenous way, as well as realizing I would have a tendency to want to over empower my child's feelings."

He is a talented singer

Kase joined his mom onstage after she won season 6 of The Masked Singer in December 2021 to perform a duet of her song “Hands.” After the duet ended, Kase gave his mom a sweet hug and said, “I love you, mom.”

Two years later, Jewel told PEOPLE that Kase had the music bug but wouldn’t necessarily be pursuing a career in music.

“He plays drums,” she said. “He has a really beautiful voice."

Jewel and Kase have a “silly” relationship

As Kase moves onto his teen years, Jewel told PEOPLE in May 2024 that their relationship has become more “silly.”

"I'm very silly. I think if you asked my son what I'm like, we laugh a lot. We're very, very, very silly," she said. "We're ridiculous. We wrestle a lot, my son and I. I didn't think that's the type of mom I'd be, but we play fight every day. It's so funny."

While she maintains the fun factor in their relationship, Jewel said she also is a “teaching mom” and prioritizes being there emotionally for her son.

“I'm definitely a teaching mom, whether he likes that or not,” she said. “I'm the kind of mom that wants to explain probably too much that might be on the negative list, but that's the kind of mom I am. I want to break things down. I want to help him understand. I hope I'm a good listener."

She painted a portrait of him

For her May 2024 art exhibition, The Portal: An Art Experience by Jewel, at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Jewel painted a portrait of her son that she told PEOPLE represented “mothering and my devotion to mothering.”

The portrait also captures Kase as he is now before he turns 13 — capturing his youth before he grows up.

"I have less mothering ahead of me than I have behind me, and it's so sad, so it was a way of me dealing with my own feelings about my son getting older and the transitions we're going to both be making in our life," Jewel told PEOPLE.
