We might have waited AGES for it, but Avatar 2 could be a unique cinema experience.

James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment has renewed its five-year deal with technology company Christie Digital, with them supplying one of their new laser projection systems for Avatar 2.

The deal will also see Lightstorm share its 3D and high frame rate (HFR) findings with Christie, allowing them to continue to push the boundaries of technology.

And if you're wondering what this could mean for you, then it could well result in Cameron's dream of watching Avatar 2 in 3D without 3D glasses come true when it finally reaches cinemas in 2020.

"I'm still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen – with no glasses. We'll get there," he explained (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"To push the boundary of digital cinema, one needs visionary, like-minded collaborators and that description fits Christie to a tee... Several years ago we began our relationship, which has worked well, so I'm pleased to be forging ahead again with Christie at my side."

Avatar 2 will apparently go into production on September 25 this year, according to producer Jon Landau.

He added that the four scripts for the Avatar sequels are "ready" and teased that Cameron's sequels have always "lived up to, if not exceeded, the original movies" over his career.

We'll find out when Avatar 2 lands in cinemas on December 18, 2020, barring any other delays.
