Mira Sorvino Shares Update on Long-Awaited “Romy and Michele” Sequel: 'The Girls Deserve a Follow-Up'
Sorvino's 'Romy and Michele' costar Lisa Kudrow has previously expressed she's also eager for a sequel to the 1997 comedy
Mira Sorvino wants a sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion just as badly as you do.
On Sunday, Sorvino 56, took part in a 90s Con panel alongside Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon — hosted by PEOPLE's Editor-in-Chief Wendy Naugle — centered around each of the group's memorable work in the 1990s, including Sorvino's 1997 comedy co-starring Lisa Kudrow.
Sorvino has been teasing the potential for a follow-up to Romy and Michele for years, and at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford this weekend, the Oscar winner gave an update on how soon fans can expect a sequel.
Romy and Michele screenwriter Robin Schiff, who also wrote the 1988 play Ladies Room on which the movie is based on, is "working on the draft" for the sequel, Sorvino shared. "Lisa and I have met with her several times and we're so excited about it," she said.
"There are many stages to getting a movie on the screen, but the crazy part is the way that it happened," continued Sorvino, referencing her onstage reunion with Kudrow at the 2022 SAG Awards, where the pair adorably paid tribute to their iconic looks from the film with color-coordinated outfits in honor of the Romy and Michele's 25th anniversary.
"That went viral and then all of a sudden the thing that we've been asking for years, which was let's get a sequel going, all of a sudden it became a viable option," Sorvino said. "And that was super exciting for us because we see here that this movie had a place in people's hearts that has not gone away. In fact, it's grown over the years. It has become embedded in people's lives in different ways, different communities, but it means something to them. So the girls deserve a follow-up."

Kudrow, 60, has previously expressed that she'd be open to starring in a sequel about the charming but vapid best friends who, in the original film, scheme to dominate their high school reunion ten years after graduating.
"I think it could be fun," the Friends star said on SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live in 2022 when asked about her thoughts on a follow-up.
Also down for second helping of Romy and Michele: Sorvino and Kudrow's costar in the film, Alan Cumming.
"Totally. I'd be absolutely game," the Traitors host, 59, told PEOPLE in 2023, adding what he envisions for Romy and Michele in a sequel: "I think they'd probably still be best friends."
