The New 'Mr & Mrs Smith' Reboot Has The Best TV Cast Of 2024 So Far
Nineteen years (yes, really) after the film iteration graced the big screen, the highly-anticipated television adaptation of Mr & Mrs Smith starring Donald Glover is almost here.
The series, which is based on the 2005 movie of the starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie that became the seventh highest-grossing film of the year, has one key and critical difference to its story though. This time around John and Jane Smith are well aware of one another’s identities from the get-go and their marriage is merely another part of their job.
Here's everything you need to know about Mr & Mrs Smith, which its co-creator Francesca Sloane has described as 'something wholly original.'
What's the plot of Mr & Mrs Smith?
As per the official synopsis, the TV reboot sees 'two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan'.
As part of the job, though, the pair must adopt new identities in an arranged marriage as – you guessed it – John and Jane Smith.
'Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone,' the synopsis reads.
'Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?'
Who stars in Mr & Mrs Smith?
Glover stars in the eight episode series as John Smith while Maya Erskine stars as his wife, Jane. Michaela Coel also makes an appearance in reboot, alongside Paul Dano, Sharon Horgan, Eiza González and Sarah Paulson.
Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intended to initially star in the series, but exited the project in 2021 citing creative differences.
