Both Halifax harbour bridges are scheduled for temporary closures this spring and summer.

The closures begin this weekend. The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be closed Sunday from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the Blue Nose Marathon.

In addition to the closure this Sunday for the Blue Nose, the Macdonald bridge will be closed on the following dates:

  • Sunday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for MACPASS Miles road races and Bridgewalk 2024.

  • Monday, Aug. 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the Natal Day Parade.

  • Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. to Monday, Aug 19 at 5:30 a.m. for maintenance.

The MacKay bridge will be closed on the following weekends:

  • Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m. to Monday, June 10 at 5:30 a.m.

  • Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. to Monday, June 17 at 5:30 a.m.

  • Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. to Monday, June 24 at 5:30 a.m.

  • Friday, July 5 at 7 p.m. to Monday, July 8 at 5:30 a.m.

Steve Proctor, the spokesperson for Halifax Harbour Bridges, said the MacKay Bridge requires maintenance.

"Because of the way infrastructure is built, there are some repairs that have to be done when there's no traffic on the deck," Proctor said.

Last November, a MacKay Bridge closure on the same day as the annual Parade of Lights led to bumper-to-bumper traffic in Halifax.

"We're very careful about choosing when to close the bridges, but unfortunately … there will be some traffic issues, so we are encouraging people to plan in advance to make alternate plans," said Proctor.
