Murder probe launched as woman, 21, found dead in Tower Hamlets

Murder squad detectives are investigating after a 21-year-old woman was found dead in east London.

Officers were scrambled to an address Ratcliffe Lane in Tower Hamlets at 2.30pm on Thursday.

A woman in her mid 40s has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

She also sustained injuries and is in hospital as police wait to question her.

Both women were known to each other, Scotland Yard said.

A police cordon has been set up around the crime scene.

Forensics officers have been trawling for clues as officers carry out door-to-door inquiries.

Detectives are awaiting tests determining the woman’s cause of death.

Neigbours spoke of their shock at the death at the flat where they said a couple live with their toddler and the child's grandmother.

A security guard, 34, who lives nearby said: "The family have been there about two or three years, they are from Bangladesh. They seemed very nice there was a child aged two or three there. We heard there had been a dispute which led to this tragedy but to be honest we are in total shock."

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have been informed and are leading the investigation. The family are being supported by specialist trained officers.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at about 14:30hrs on Thursday, 23 May to Ratcliffe Lane, E14 following a report of an unresponsive female at the scene.

“Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the woman, aged 21, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Her next of kin have been informed.”

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, the local policing lead for Tower Hamlets and Hackney, said: "My thoughts are with the family of this lady at this exceptionally difficult time.

"This appears to be a tragic set of circumstances and we are working closely, with the Specialist Crime Command, to understand exactly what occurred and to piece together the events that have led to this devastating outcome.

"Over the course of the next few days, my officers will be in the location of Ratcliffe Lane to provide any reassurance that the community needs but also as an opportunity for anyone with any information about this incident to speak with us.
