Netflix's Workin' Moms creator on why season 7 is the last
There's nothing like the unique heartbreak of your favourite TV show being cancelled.
Unfortunately, fans of Netflix series Workin' Moms are facing this exact problem, as it's been confirmed that season seven, recently released on the streamer, will be the final season.
The series – starring Catherine Reitman (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Juno Rinaldi, Enuka Okuma, Jessalyn Wanlim and Dani Kind as the tight friendship group of moms – and has been beloved by so many, and will be missed.
We looked into the TV show, as well as why its creator decided to call time after its seventh season.
What is Workin' Moms about?
The Netflix series follows a group of women as they tackle motherhood, mental health, friendship and everything else that comes with having a career after having children.
An official synopsis from the streamer reads: "Maternity leave is over and it's time for these four moms to return to work while navigating kids, bosses, love and life in modern-day Toronto."
Why won't there be another season of Workin' Moms after season 7?
In an interview with Variety, the show's creator Catherine Reitman explained that the reason for cancelling the series is that it's best to stop while the show is still beloved, and to not let the creativity and love dry out.
"We’ve all seen a show that loses its juice and keeps puttering and re-scrambling storylines ... I didn’t want that to be the case with Workin’ Moms," she said. "Our fans have been incredibly loyal to us. I take that seriously."
Catherine added she knew in her head how the series should end, with discussions about how it would end starting when season six was being filmed. She's been asked often if there will be a Workin' Moms film or spinoff, but Catherine isn't convinced.
"The shows I see that have turned into films, often they’re such an insult to the show..." she said to Variety. "I don’t think audiences enjoy it. A show exists at the time and in its iteration for a reason."
We can but dream.
When and where is Workin' Moms season 7 available to watch?
As of 28 March – when the final episode of Workin' Moms aired on CBC– all episodes of season seven, and all other seasons of the show, are available to watch on Netflix.
